Mindset is 99% of business. No matter how good your strategy is, you won’t get far without a great mindset. Typically on Her Life, By Design, we chat more about the strategical and tactical side of building and growing your business. This is why I’m so excited to have Reese Evans, a mindset and abundance coach, and founder of the Yes Supply Method, on today’s episode. As a business owner, understanding how your mindset is holding you back is crucial to your growth and career. While strategies can propel your business forward, your mindset could hold you back from putting a great strategy to work. So without further ado, here is why the mindset journey matters, and why manifestation can become a powerful practice.
How Your Mindset is Holding You Back
The Yes Supply Method is a life coaching system that allows entrepreneurs to reach new levels of human potential, emotional connection, and self-belief through a series of mindset and manifestation techniques. The method works with the subconscious mind in order to reprogram old, harmful behaviors and replace them with new ones to incite positive change. According to Reese, this is why so many people set New Year’s goals and resolutions only to fall off the wagon sooner or later. Reese explains that we make goals with our conscious mind, but the subconscious mind is how we get them to stick.
Achieving Your Goals By Tapping Into the Subconscious
If you’re like me, you’re a little woo-woo curious. You might even be a little skeptical as far as manifestation is involved. Reese assures listeners that manifestation is a proven technique that has been backed up by science numerous times. Growing tired of her own never-ending cycle of limiting beliefs, Reese jumped into the world of manifestation through tons of research. Spending countless hours reading studies, Reese discovered that “our brains are plastic-like and we can change our neuropathways to think differently.”
“The mindset journey and manifestation aren’t woo-woo, it’s tapping into the potential that’s inside you,” Reese assures listeners. To better understand the flexibility of our brains, we need to understand how our brains work.
We are in a state of super learning in the ages of 0-7. During this time, we’re learning from our parents through example. We learn how they talk, eat, and how they behave in social settings. These observations are then programmed into our system as our prefrontal cortex locks it all in by 7 years old.
Fast-forward to adulthood — if you’re attempting to accomplish something that goes against years of conditioning and programming, you’ll be met with a lot of resistance, anxiety, or fear. By deep-diving into the subconscious mind, you’ll be able to figure out what programs are no longer serving you and replace them with the programs that can move you forward. Through this method, we’ll be able to remold our brain, since “how we look at the world actually changes the reality we live in.”
Reese realized that her own pre-programmed limiting beliefs surrounding money and finding success as a woman of color came from the media she consumed. But with the re-working of her subconscious, she is able to create her own truth and reality; rewriting her narrative.
Tapping Into the Subconscious and Rewriting Your Narrative
We all have a list of goals we want to accomplish in the new year. But as we head into 2021, how can we be certain that this would actually be the year we stick with our plans to see our goals through? This is why Reese recommends undoing the negative programming that is getting in your way.
First, you need to start with your goal. And instead of focusing on what could go wrong with it, build towards what’s right. For instance, if your goal is to hit 6-figures, imagine what your reality would be. What will you see? How will you feel? This envisioning of what will be will make this goal more familiar, thus becoming more of a reality.
Next, Reese asks listeners to think about the version of you that has 6-figures. What do you do every day? How about your identity? What are your habits? What do you believe about yourself? When you have the answers, start programing these habits and beliefs every single day. By doing so, you can get rid of the thoughts that no longer serve you.
3 Techniques to Undo Negative Programming
Envisioning what it would be like to achieve your goal is just the first step. Once you have your eye set on the target and what life would be like when you achieve it, it’s time to undo the negative programming standing in your way. In this episode, Reese walks us through 3 different techniques: neuro-linguistic programming, hypnosis, and the emotional freedom technique. Let’s break these techniques down…
Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Reese explains that we think in pictures and feelings, even though we speak in words. When we imagine a situation, we can picture and feel it. But for some people who haven’t done the thing they want to accomplish, the picture or feeling starts to fill their body with negative imagery or emotions. Neuro-linguistic programming allows you to shift that negative characteristic, reframing feelings such as nervousness or anxiety into excitement and exhilaration.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis brings you back to the ages of 0-7 in order to reprogram any negative programs that were downloaded in your youth. Through the process, you’ll reprogram those limiting beliefs with their positive counterparts, allowing you to feel a lot less resistance to these struggles after hypnosis.
Emotional Freedom Technique
If you’re about to do something that is intimidating to you, you might be feeling negative, fearful, and anxious. Reese explains that the only reason why you feel that way is that there’s dense energy in your body. The emotional freedom technique will rebalance your energy system through a series of taps on specific points on your body.
Reese walks listeners through how each technique works in this episode. She illustrates different scenarios and how each technique will help undo any negative programming that stops you from utilizing your full potential.
How to Get Out of Your Own Way
Aside from limiting beliefs, there’s another type of negative programming: self-sabotage. It’s something everyone is guilty of, which Reese promises is natural and instinctual. “If there’s something that you want and you don’t have it, you’re self-sabotaging in a way… even if you can’t see it.” But the good news is once you recognize your self-sabotaging behavior, you can control it and change it for the better.
Reese describes self-sabotaging as a negative program downloaded into the fabric of human DNA. Since humans are naturally tribal creatures, we crave being just like everyone else. And because of how we have evolved, we feel safe when we’re in a tribe. If you’re the one lone ranger who wants to do something out of the norm, there’s an embedded fear of rejection. This is ingrained in our survival instincts. In order to stop self-sabotaging, we first need to recognize that we’re getting in our own way because we want to feel safe. Reese reminds listeners that “if you want what people don’t have, you need to be willing to do what most people won’t do.”
There’s a Devil at Every Level
There’s a common misconception that success and accomplishing huge goals will make all your fears and anxieties disappear. However, with every new level, you’ll face a set of limiting beliefs and worries. They even might be the same ones you felt from the very start. For Reese and many entrepreneurs, the major mindset issue she faces is the fear of success. She is working through the fear of judgment that comes with more wealth. Being labeled as greedy or having people say “who does she think she is,” are just a few of the fears associated with her increase in revenue.
As Reese works to undo these negative programs, she constantly reminds herself that a business, by definition, is a vehicle to make money. So it makes no sense why she should be ashamed or embarrassed. Reese has to constantly reframe herself and touch base with the good her money is allowing her to do. Because of her wealth, she’s able to make donations. And because her business is growing, she’s able to create job opportunities.
For many entrepreneurs, their constant devil is imposter syndrome. To which Reese advises listeners, “don’t think you have to be something you’re not.” Imposter syndrome tends to go hand-in-hand with the act of comparing yourself to others. And when you compare, you’re telling yourself that you have to be something you’re not in order to be successful. What Reese prescribes for entrepreneurs who suffer from imposter syndrome to do is, “grow your business being exactly who you are.” Which doesn’t mean being the best in your industry. It simply means being your unique self. There’s someone out there who needs your help who can relate and feel drawn to you.
Other Business Related Fears
In this episode, Reese and I discuss two very common business related fears — the fear of losing it all, and the fear of selling.
The Fear of Losing it All
If you’ve ever felt like what you’ve achieved is all an accident, you might have a fear of losing it all. Reese’s advice? Know that that’s your old program trying to pull you back. If you reach a new milestone, you’re most likely doing new things. Your old programs are trying to pull you back under the guise of safety. They’re popping up to protect you since this is uncharted territory. Recognize that who you are now is entirely different from the person you used to be. And instead of placing the focus on you, focus on how you can help more people through your business. And if you really are afraid of losing it all, Reese reassures you that if you’ve done it once, you can do it again.
The Fear of Selling
When it comes to the fear of selling, Reese says that there’s no better way than to be a product of your own product. For instance, she lives and breathes mindset and she shares it on her social media every day. As her audience get to see Reese on her journey, she is a living example of how mindset and manifestation could work in your favor. Her content strategy involves sharing the vulnerable parts of her life, including the struggles she faces and how she is able to overcome them. In this episode, Reese also reminds listeners that selling is something we all have experience with, but we just don’t realize it.
Understanding Your Mindset Journey
This discussion about overcoming mental blocks and negative programming has been an eye-opening one. Whether you’re an established or brand new entrepreneur, having the right mindset can make or break the journey. More often than not, our limiting beliefs, self-sabotaging behavior, and other mental blocks cause anxiety and fear around the things we want to accomplish. If you’re ready to flip the script, tune into this episode with Reese as she shares her tools of the trade from her morning routine to the different techniques she teaches to combat negativity.
