If you’re a long time listener, you’ve heard a handful of episodes with my dear friend, Jen Morilla. Jen is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to building an online business. She’s also the go-to coach when it comes to adopting the right mindset that’ll help you succeed. Jen joins us on today’s episode to discuss the 5 mindset blocks that are holding you back and how to get past them.

These 5 mindset blocks are some of the most commonly experienced ones amongst online entrepreneurs. Jen reveals the roots of why so many of us experience the same blocks.

Mindset takes constant work and effort. And even though you’ve worked through a previous problem, the same issue might pop back up later. The reason why Jen thinks this is the case, especially for entrepreneurs, is because there is a blurry line between running a business and having a life that merges quite well.

“So what you think you have a problem with, in entrepreneurship actually starts to come up in your relationships with your friends, with your parents, and with your romantic partners. And you’re like, wait a minute, I do that in my business. The thing is that once you fix it there, you fix it everywhere else. And that’s where like the magic happens.”

Unfortunately, mindset blocks do not resolve themselves and disappear forever. But with the proper tools, you’ll be able to identify them and resolve them when you need to. In this episode, Jen shares some tips and tools on how you can move past these 5 common mindset blocks that are holding you back.

Imposter Syndrome

Prior to recording this episode, I polled my Instagram audience on what their biggest mindset blocks and struggles are. I received answers like “fearing outside judgment,” “social anxiety,” and “feeling like the market is too saturated.”

On the surface, these sound like separate issues. But to Jen’s expert eye, they all fit under the same category: imposter syndrome.

Jen encourages listeners to dive deep into those thoughts whenever they come up. The fear of judgment, social anxiety, and feeling like you can’t make it in a saturated market — these fears all take root in experiences from our past.

“Go back to when you were young and think of the moment that somebody made fun of you.”

These childhood experiences have snuck their way into our psyche, showing up whenever we’re about to take a risk or do something different, such as pivoting our business or creating new content. But in reality, no one judges or sends you messages about why you suck, because who has time for that? And if they do, they’re mean people with nothing better to do. So pay no mind to them.

But what happens when the fear of judgment stems from your friends and family? Many new entrepreneurs stop themselves from starting businesses out of the fear of judgment from their friends and family. To which, Jen reminds listeners that “the truth is that the people who truly love you, like your siblings, family — they will support you regardless.”

Tune in to this episode as Jen uncovers how imposter syndrome creeps into every entrepreneur’s mind and business, no matter how successful they are. She also shares how you can best approach and reshape your mindset in the face of imposter syndrome.

Avoiding the Comparison Trap

Another common mindset block that every entrepreneur faces, no matter where they are in their respective journeys, is falling into the comparison trap. Comparing yourself to another entrepreneur in your niche is unhealthy, and unrealistic. But what ends up happening is we start comparing ourselves to people when we’re mindlessly scrolling on social media.

The good news? This is behavior that you can put an end to immediately. “Put the person on mute, stop following them,” Jen encourages. “Do whatever you have to do to control your environment. There’s only so much you can control and that is something you control.”

Jen’s biggest tip is to recognize who you’re comparing yourself to. Once you’ve recognized this, mute them or unfollow them. “Then look at who you’re comparing yourself with and look at where you are and be real with yourself. Because chances are you probably just started a business and you’re comparing yourself to Tony Robbins, or Marie Forleo.”

Comparison is something that comes from basic human survival. Cavemen were comparing themselves to alphas who caught more animals. It’s a basic instinct. But these days, we have the ability to disconnect and reflect. Jen recommends journaling and really hashing it out. Do a fear inventory, check-in with yourself on why you might be feeling this way.

Whatever you do, take a step back and re-center yourself. Chances are, the people you compare yourself to either have or are facing the same comparison issues. Trust me.

Why Balance is the Key to Consistency

From the outside looking in, it’s easy to see why people would assume certain entrepreneurs (such as myself or Jen), are constantly on a high. On social media, we might appear to constantly find the motivation. Or maybe from the outside, consistency is something that comes easily to us.

But that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

What really goes on behind-the-scenes is a lot of balance and grace. Finding balance in the sense of tuning into what your body needs and when you’re more inclined to accomplish certain tasks. For example, I don’t feel up to recording podcast episodes on Mondays. Instead, I record episodes on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Or creating and batching content on Fridays because that’s when I’m feeling energized for the weekend and at my most creative.

“It’s all about having that balance in that flow,” Jen reminds listeners. But the second part of the equation is giving yourself grace. “Because you know, when you’re being lazy, and you know when you’re tired. I know that I have the energy to do something and I’m just being lazy versus when I’m actually mentally exhausted.”

It’s important to plan ahead in order to prepare for the times where you’re just feeling unmotivated. And if you’ve set aside time to batch your content, you’ll be able to take days off when you’re not feeling up to the task. But no matter what, don’t forget to give yourself grace on the days where you’re feeling mentally exhausted.

Healing Your Money Mindset Traumas

Money mindset issues and traumas are a common theme amongst entrepreneurs and people in general. Where does it come from? Why do so many of us have this fear and anxiety when it comes to selling, making money, and investing money in ourselves or our businesses? Jen ensures listeners that your money mindset is generational — meaning what your parents believe about money, how they talk about it, and how they approach money is then bestowed upon you early in life. But that’s not to say that your parents are at fault. Similarly, your parents’ money mindset was instilled in them from their parents, and so the chain continues.

Healing and moving past your money mindset traumas takes a lot of practice and patience. But the work starts with recognizing these thought patterns surrounding scarcity so you can break the cycle.

When you see a price tag attached to a mastermind, course, or coaching program, it’s easy to feel intimidated and fall back into the scarcity mindset. Recognize those thoughts and start breaking them down. If you’re making the right investment in a coach that has achieved the same results you’re looking for, you’re learning the strategies and processes to take you to your income goals.

In this episode, Jen and I speak from our own personal experiences. We openly discuss how every investment we’ve made in our business, be it in coaching programs, courses, mentors, and hiring, has come back to us tenfold.

We also share a silly example about how purchases that may seem unnecessary (like my favorite Dyson Airwrap), actually benefit us and allows us to show up as our most confident, and best selves.

Identifying and Stopping Self-Sabotage

Finally, the last mindset block — and possibly the most sinister of them all — is self-sabotage. Self-sabotage presents itself in many different ways, making it really hard to identify whether or not you’re getting in your own way. For instance, the constant pursuit of perfection is a form of self-sabotage. More cunning of all, you may find certain fears and behaviors that are stopping you from achieving your goals.

Jen shares that micromanaging is a common behavior that is a form of self-sabotage. “Hiring the right people and letting go so that they can be in their zone of genius while I’m in my zone of genius is all part of self-sabotaging,” Jen says. And as hard as it is to let go of the reins, it is a necessary step if you want to get out of your own way.

When it comes to stopping self-sabotaging behaviors, Jen recommends creating a fear inventory, manifesting the lifestyle you want, and backing that up with daily affirmations. “It’s all about creating a different belief, and then just practicing that muscle or machine,” Jen encourages. She goes on to explain that “our subconscious are machines. You behave and you do everything you do because of your subconscious.” In order to stop self-sabotage, you need to reprogram and start having a different conversation.

In this episode, Jen shares her expert insight into how you can develop the tools you need to reframe and reprogram your behaviors. We also discuss the power of manifesting and practicing daily affirmations as if you’ve already achieved the success you’re after.
