I love Mahekal Beach Resort not only because it boasts a beautiful, sprawling property, thoughtful design and spectacular service, but also because it is the perfect resort to spend the day relaxing at. During the first couple days in Playa del Carmen, I toured the ruins and swam in cenotes. And when I found myself exhausted on the last day of my trip, I spent a full 24 hours taking advantage of Mahekal Resort itself.
Mahekal was named the #9 hotel in all of Mexico by Travel + Leisure and, from what I experienced, for good reason. Should you find yourself in Playa del Carmen, stay at Mahekal and follow this recipe for a perfect day of relaxation.
Start your morning with an early alarm and a cup of coffee at one of Mahekal‘s three restaurants. The beautiful yellow and pink tones erupting from the horizon and reflecting on the ocean are worth not sleeping in.
Eat breakfast at Las Olas, while looking out at the beautiful Caribbean Sea.
Relax by one of Mahekal’s three pools. My personal favorite was the infinity pool, but there is also a large pool located centrally inside the property and an adults-only pool that boasts a swim-up bar.
Order a mezcal margarita and ceviche for lunch. Make sure to try the guacamole as well – the chips are baked fresh on the stove and the homemade guacamole is incredible.
After lunch, enjoy a treatment at Mahekal’s Revive Spa.
My aromatherapy massage was relaxing and stress-relieving, but the thing that completed the experience for me was Mahekal’s jacuzzi. Armed with ice water, a comfortable robe and a mug of herbal tea, it is the perfect way to relax before a treatment.
( I apologize for my horrific iPhone photos )
Take your time meditating & reflecting in Mahekal’s relaxation room and when you’re ready, return to your room and relax in your room’s personal hammock for an hour or two.
After your dinner at Mahekal’s Fuego, head out to Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida for some dancing and drinks!
And don’t worry … Mahekal has you covered for your pregame. These bottles of tequila with shot glasses & limes are always set out for guests 😉
Have you been to Mahekal or to a similar resort? How much time do you normally spend relaxing at beach resorts?

Seems so heavenly. I love resorts like this, so gorgeous.
The shots of Patron? PRICELESS 😉
Hahaha right?? It was the first time I had ever seen something like that at a hotel … Can’t complain 😉
This place looks amazing! That sunset! Those margaritas! I wish your blog came with a button to transport myself into the pictures. Would love to stay here!
You are too kind!! I wish I could transport myself back to this beautiful hotel also 🙂
This place is something out of a magazine! I’m looking them up right now!
Mahekal is such a gorgeous resort! Highly, highly recommend a stay here. Thanks for reading, Tasha 🙂
This place looks amazing!!! Your photos look amazing and I am definitely staying here next time I visit!
Mahekal is so wonderful – definitely a must in PdC!
wow!! This resort is so pretty! Is Mexico affordable to travel?
From the US, it totally is! The dollar is really strong. A delicious authentic Mexican dinner is only around $8 – $10 USD 🙂
This looks like paradise, and by the sounds of it, it is! We’re totally keen on the infinity pool, and maybe some Patron! haha.
When we visit Mexico we know where we are staying!
Haha the combination of an infinity pool and Patron was the best! 🙂
This hotel looks truly incredible!
It was 🙂 Definitely recommend staying at Mahekal if you’re in Playa del Carmen!
Hi! In love with this resort was wondering if you would share things to do around there. Are the cenotes close? Or the ruins? Thanks in advance!
The cenotes are close yet!! There are many tour groups you can check out that will take you to cenotes or Chichen Itza. I would stay a few nights in Tulum if you want to see the Tulum ruins though 🙂 Search “Tulum” on my blog and you’ll see a couple posts about where to stay and what to do! Thanks for reading, Natalie xo
Like, complimentary Patron??? I’m heading here at the end of February!
