4 Steps to Finding & Validating Your Course Topic

(So You Know It’ll Sell)

A proven 4-step method to finding a profitable course topic that your audience will pay good money for.

Time is your most valuable asset. Whether you’re a business owner, entrepreneur, influencer, or service provider. Your time cannot be replaced, unlike money or financial resources. This is why I’m a huge proponent of turning your service into an online course.

As a service provider, you’ve likely started your business in a one-to-one capacity. Meaning your income is directly tied to the hours you spend working.

And the longer you stay in business, the more likely you will get fully booked out. So you have 2 options if increasing your income and earning potential is your goal. One – you can continue raising your rates. Two – you can turn your service into an online course.

Here’s why the latter is the smarter option. Plus, I’ll be showing you how to package your services into your very own online course ASAP.

How to Turn Your Service Into an Online Course

An online course is a great way to establish another stream of income. That’s why I opt for turning your service into an online course over continuously raising your rates.

While you can always raise your rates, an online course is a completely separate source of income. This will allow you to maximize your time while taking on way more clients than you ever could without one.

Plus, an online course will also give you more freedom and flexibility over your schedule. Even though raising your rates gives you more money, it won’t give you back your time.

Convinced that an online course is exactly what you need to take your business to the next level? Here’s what you need to do to turn your service into an online course.

*P.S. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan of increasing your rates in addition to creating an online course!

Market research and getting to know your audience | How to Turn Your Service Into an Online Course

Know Your Audience

First and foremost, you need to know your audience and what they want to learn from you before you begin creating your first online course.

As a service provider with a few clients under your belt, you already have insight into what it is your clients are looking for.

Think about the most common problem that your clients come to you looking for help with. If you’re a social media manager, your clients hire you because they need help managing their social media.

In this case, your course will deliver exactly that – how to manage your social media channels like a professional.

If you’re a fitness coach and most of your clients come to you looking for help with weight loss, your online course should help your audience achieve the weight loss they desire.

Something important to keep in mind is that your online course is not going to teach EVERYTHING you know or everything you teach your one-on-one clients.

This is because online courses need to be specifically targeted to provide a solution for your “ideal learner.”

For example, fitness coaches generally work with their clients to help them achieve their fitness goals. This can range from weight loss to muscle gain (and everything in between) depending on their client’s wants and needs.

But their online course shouldn’t include all their knowledge because their clients whose goals are weight loss will not purchase a course on building muscle and vice versa.

With this in mind, you’ll want to get very clear about the most profitable course topic for you as it pertains to your audience.

You can do so by surveying your audience on social media, or simply thinking about the most common problem your 1:1 clients come to you with.

Define Their Goals and Transformation

Once you’ve determined the most in-demand topic for your online course, you’ll want to define your course learner’s goals and transformation.

In other words, what will your course learner gain after going through your online course from start to finish? Knowing this will help you design your course to serve your audience and create a positive impact.

Not to mention, delivering a solution for the problem that your course learner is seeking is a must if you want your course to sell and be successful.

Luckily, as a service provider, you already have great insight into the impact your services have.

So take some time to think about what the before and after look like for your student. Doing so will ensure your online course is delivering immense value that has been proven through your one-on-one services. This is key before heading to your next step…

Map Out the Steps

Finally, the last step to packaging your service into an online course is to map out the exact steps that your students will take in order to achieve the transformation they want.

This is why the previous step of defining your student’s goals and transformation is so important. Your online course will be divided into modules. In other words, your online course will break down a step-by-step process that your students will go through in order to get them from point A to point B.

The steps that you map out for your online course will be similar to the steps that you walk your one-on-one clients through that helped them achieve their desired results.

All you need to do is brainstorm and jot down the exact steps for your students to follow to achieve their goals. Additionally, you want to consider any learning supplements to accompany the lessons that’ll help them along the way.

These could be worksheets, exercises, or any type of action item to aid in their learning process.

Creating, Launching, and Getting Your Course in More Hands

Now that you’ve gone through these steps, you’re on your way to successfully turn your service into an online course!
