Entering Hacienda San Angel from the cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta is like having been transported into another world…

Hacienda San Angel

The open-air lobby and courtyard are filled with bright flowers and lush greenery. The trickling of water from the stone fountains has a calming effect and you are immediately made to feel as if you are in a truly special place.

And you are.

Hacienda San Angel has a lot of history.

The hotel was originally purchased in the 1970’s by Richard Burton. At the time, it was called Casa Bur-Sus, but when its current owner purchased the property in the ’90’s, she re-named it Hacienda San Angel. Inspired by Colonial Mexico, she turned the hotel into the romantic and charming masterpiece it is today.

Every room at Hacienda San Angel is opulent and perfect down to the last detail.

I had the pleasure of staying in the San Gabriel Suite – a spacious room that looks out onto one of the hotel’s three pools. Like the rest of Hacienda San Angel, the room is inspired by the Mexican Colonialism era with a large carved chair from 1890 and wooden niche on the wall from around the year 1800.Hacienda San AngelHacienda San AngelHacienda San Angel

These artifacts are perfectly contrasted with more opulent luxurious touches like a crystal chandelier, ornate gold headboards, a claw foot bathtub and Givenchy toiletries.

Step outside the San Gabriel Suite and you are greeted with a large pool, perfect for spending a day swimming and sunbathing. There is also an open-air room near the pool with tables for playing games or working, and couches for reading.

Explore the rest of the Hacienda San Angel and you will find two more pools and a handful of roofs to enjoy spectacular views from.

The food at Hacienda San Angel is something to write home about.

Breakfast is enjoyed family style in an open-air room located off the lobby. The chef, Ramon, prepares a custom breakfast for you depending on what you’re craving that morning. I enjoyed a plate of tropical fruits and Huevos Mexicanos, both of which were incredibly fresh and delicious.

Side note: I could live off the mangoes in Mexico.

Be sure to enjoy dinner at the hotel for at least one night, even if you’re not staying here. Up the grand staircase in the courtyard is Hacienda San Angel Gourmet – a fine dining experience located on the hotel’s rooftop. Enjoy spectacular dishes like Baked Pacific Lobster Tail and Al Pastor Shrimp Brochette while watching the sun set over the ocean.

The restaurant also hosts a Sunday brunch! We unfortunately weren’t able to enjoy this event, but with offerings like made-to order waffles and omelets, prime rib and crepes, I will more than likely be back. 😉

If the luxurious accommodations and fine dining options haven’t already convinced you to book a stay at Hacienda San Angel, listen to this…

The hotel not only strives to provide its guests with the best experience possible; the hotel also gives back in a very big way. Their cause? Dogs!

Once a year, Hacienda San Angel hosts a gala for which all proceeds benefit the ASPCA directly. They also take in sick and disabled dogs from the streets, get them healthy again and give them the TLC they deserve. So, it isn’t uncommon to see a few friendly fluff balls roaming around during your visit at the hotel 🙂

I’m in love with haciendas and am going to Mexico in November so this is definitely relevant! But religious iconography scares me kinda… is the whole property decorated in Virgin Mary statues and angelic vestiges?! Because those ornate headboards are something I want in my life!
