Things to Know

Best time to visit:

The most popular time to visit Mykonos is definitely in the hot summer months of June, July and August.

However, if you’re looking to avoid some of the tourist crowds and wanting to enjoy slightly cooler weather (though still warm around 80 degrees!), I would actually recommend booking your trip during September or October. You’ll enjoy cheaper prices as well since the big tourism season is winding down.

How to get around:

The most expensive way to get around Mykonos is by private taxi.

The cheapest is by public bus. Take the bus when traveling from your hotel to a beach or club. It’s easy peasy and just around 3 euros!

And finally, the most fun way to travel around Mykonos is by scooter. If for nothing other than the experience, you should rent one. They are so much fun and laid-back, balmy Mykonos is the perfect place to try one out.

How to get to Mykonos:

You can easily get to Mykonos via plane or ferry. I would recommend flying into Mykonos Island National Airport from Athens International Airport if money isn’t a big concern.

But if you’re looking to island-hop and save some money, the best option is traveling by ferry from Athens. Using Hellenic Seaways or Sea Jets, you can travel to Mykonos in 3 1/2 hours for around 55 euro. Or using Blue Star Ferries, get there in 6 hours for 32 euro.

I traveled from Athens on Hellenic Seaways and honestly really enjoyed the relaxing 3 hours.

Where to Stay

Cavo Tagoo ($$$$)

If you’re looking for luxurious 5-star accommodation in Mykonos, the white-washed Cavo Tagoo (click the link; watch the video) should be your #1 choice.

The hotel describes themselves as “a realm of unpretentious class, style and glamour, seamlessly blending the elements of Cycladic tradition with the magnificence of contemporary architecture, the jet-setting vibes of Mykonos and the notion of chic barefoot luxury.” Mmmmmmk. Sign me up.

Cavo Tagoo’s location is ideal. It’s about a 10 minute drive/20 minute walk from Mykonos town.

And price-wise… It’s pricey.

The Classic Room is the cheapest at around $500/night in the month of October. The Junior Suite with Infinity Pool is $980/night and the Two Bedroom Golden Villa with Private Pool is $2,200/night.

The hotel’s main restaurant, Kiku, offers gourmet Japanese-Fusion cuisine.

Mykonos Blu Hotel ($$$)

The Mykonos Blu was recently renovated and now has a seriously stunning property with multiple lounges & restaurants, a new Sky Terrace and a beautiful infinity pool.

The cheapest accommodation option, the Island Bungalow, is $250/night during the month of October. The Luna Blu Suite (below) is $1,100/night and the Endless Blu Villa with Private Pool is $2,300/night.

In terms of dining, the Blu has a range of options:

Aegean Poets – Mediterranean cuisine in a formal dining room

L’Archipel – Contemporary cuisine enjoyed al fresco (below)

Delos Lounge – Perfect place for a sunset cocktail or an after-dinner drink before heading out into Mykonos’ nightlife

The Blu is located on Psarou Beach, one of the most well-known, most beautiful beaches in Mykonos. The hotel offers full service at the beach, which is a unique amenity in Mykonos.

Mykonian K Hotel ($$)

I stayed at the Mykonian K during my stay and I really enjoyed it. It’s a great option for those of you who want to stay somewhere beautiful but not pay the price tag on the above resorts.

The cheapest option, the Sea View room, is only $200/night in the month of October and the most expensive option, the Sea View Naia Suite with Private Pool is $670/night. Really reasonable.

The Myconian K was a gorgeous hotel with lots of great amenities, but one of the things I enjoyed most about it was its location. The walk to Mykonos Town is only about 10 minutes and, along the way, there’s a place to rent scooters for the day and a bus stop to head to the party hub of the island.

Where to Eat

Nammos

Nammos is a must-do while in Mykonos. It’s actually a formal restaurant, outdoor café and beach club rolled into one, so you could easily spend the good part of a day here.

Matsuhisa

Matsuhisa is located inside the Belvedere Hotel and is one of the more expensive restaurants in Mykonos. It’s owned by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa (yes, that Nobu), so if you like that “new style Japanese cuisine,” make a reservation here.

Kiki’s Taverna

Kiki’s is about a 20 minute bus or scooter ride from Mykonos Town, but well worth the trip because the food is delicious and it’s a local secret.

The restaurant is perched on a hillside with a beautiful view of the beach. And since the restaurant is open-air under a covering of trees, you can dine in the perfect warm weather with a slight breeze.

A few things to note about Kiki’s:

• It opens at 12:30 pm and closes when it gets dark … because the place has no electricity…
• Since there’s no electricity, there is no phone number to make a reservation with, so plan to wait about an hour for a table…
• And while you’re waiting, you can enjoy free boxed water and wine…
• While you’re there, enjoy Agios Sostis beach before or after you eat!

Jimmy’s Gyros

Like most small, hole-in-the-wall places, Jimmy’s Gyros is authentic. It’s located right in the heart of Mykonos Town, so it’s a great place to stop for a quick lunch during a day of exploration.

My favorite kind of gyro is packed with chicken souvlaki, tomatoes, onions, fries and a shit ton of tzatziki. Best enjoyed with a cold Mythos beer.

See Mykonos’ windmills! 

Explore Mykonos’ Little Venice, a gorgeous part of the town where the buildings directly meet the sea. This is an amazing place to enjoy a meal right on the water or watch the sun set over the Aegean with a cocktail (from Caprice Bar!!). It’s also less stinky and crowded than the real Venice 😉

Rent a scooter. Like I mentioned above, they are super cheap and a fun way to explore the towns and beaches outside of Mykonos Town!
